ARFID or Picky Eating can bring up lot’s of stress and anxiety about seeking change.
Help with eating challenges doesn’t have to be rigid or overwhelming. It starts with understanding your goals, how it’s impacting you, and what feels safe to work on. Support is individualized to meet your needs and paced in a way that feels good.
Meet Shelley Restall, a social worker helping people experiencing selective eating and ARFID. Utilizing neurodivergent and inclusive practices.

YES! I provide neurodivergent affirming support for ARFID, and picky eating. This focuses on pacing services and change in way that is consent based care, integrating discussions about your life, special interests and of course talking about your relationship with food. I focus on exploring your relationship with food from a sensory perspective, understanding your nutritional needs, ways your environment supports and challenges you, and exploring how to engage in change with food that is not flooding you out of your comfort zone. I specialize in ways to support those with PDA profiles as well around navigating picky eating too.

ARFID treatment, and support for picky eating or what I frequently refer to as selective eating as it’s more inclusive is individualized. That means that if you want to just process emotions and social relationship concerns that present because of your limitations with food choices we can totally do that. From a neurodivergent affirming approach I am always exploring creating safety with yourself, understanding ways to feel more self-accepting, reducing internalized ableism, and navigating setting boundaries in social interactions that involve food as this can be very triggering with anxiety. If food exposures are a focused goal for you, we can create a plan that allows you to feel in control, have lot’s of autonomy about choice, feel prepared on how to cope with the anxiety or discomfort that maybe experienced.

I offer support to both parents alone, the individual child, and the family system as it is beneficial to each family system. Reach out to discuss your concerns and let’s create a plan that feels supportive.

Anytime you start on a new journey of getting help it’s important to start with understanding what is bothering you and what you have previously tried or not tried to guide the options we have available to us in this opportunity to get help.

Collaborate about What you want to get out of therapy.
You’re part of the process of getting help with you want to change. We can create goals if that feels helpful to you. I will provide feedback and explanations about recommendations with how we can work on creating change.
Therapy is individualized to meet what you want to get out of it. Even if therapy starts with you wanting to come to get help with your selective eating patterns, because a family member or friend is concerned about you, it’s important that you have a space where you feel safe and heard to understand the impact of your concerns on your quality of life.
Plan with Purpose to help you feel in control each step of the day with reducing anxiety.
I strive to focus on each session offering a balance between compassionate listening so you feel heard, alongside challenging you to reach your goals about what you want to be different. We can also set a goal to work on practicing a new skill or trying a new food in a way that works for you in between sessions.
Oftentimes clients seek out my services because they are wanting to have either action oriented change or because they are seeking out validation and support in a way they feel heard.
Check in about Progress throughout to ensure you feel it’s helpful.
Each session I will checkin to determine how you feel it’s helpful and not helpful so we can adjust what we are focusing on to meet your needs. I welcome your honest feedback as this is important to guiding our work together.
Each session can be a place to check in on one specific goal you are working on, or to talk about something that feels more urgent to get support with. This is your therapy experience and it’s important you feel your concerns are addressed.
